National Service Ordinance





  • The riots were started by the Chinese-educated students when the Government introduced National Service.


  • The National Service ordinance required all males aged between 18 and 20 to register would be either jailed or fined.

Why Did The Riot Happen?






  • National Service was not popular with Secondary students from Chinese schools.



  • Many of the Secondary school students were 20 years old or above as their education had disrupted by the war.



  • Furthermore,the students were not willing to depend the Colonial Government which ignored the Chinese students' interests.

When And How Did It Happen?!





  • It happen in 1954 in front of the Government house.the riots started by the Chinese-educated students when the Government introduced National Service.



  • The traditional Chinese belief that 'Good men should never be soldiers'

What Happen After The Riot?






  • On 13 May 1954,more than one thousand students gathered in front of the Government house to present their petition to the governor.



  • Soon, the peaceful demonstration turned into a riot when the police called in disperse the crowd.



  • The police and the students clashed about 26 people were injured and 48 students were arrested.

Maria Hertogh's Past



  • Born in Java 1937 to Dutch catholic parents.

  • Her natural parents were imprisoned during the Japanese Occupation.

  • She came under the care of a Malay women, Che Aminah and her husband.

  • She was brought up as a Muslim and named her 'Nadra'

Why did the riots happen?!!!!



  • The court ruled that Maria should be returned to her natural parents

  • The judge announced that the Dutch law did not recognise Maria's marriage as she get announced that was under-aged and her natural father's constant was not obtained.

  • This upset the Muslim community as they felt that Muslim law was not respected.

How and when the riots happen ?!








  • In 1949,Maria's mother ,Adeline Hertogh,came to claim her daughter back.



  • The case was brought to the High Court in Singapore.



  • Meanwhile, she was placed under the care of the Social Welfare Department.













  • In may 1950 the court ruled that Maria should be returned to her natural parents.



  • However, Che Aminah opposed the decision and sent an appeal.




  • Two months later, the court returned Maria to Che Aminah.












  • Therefore,in November 1950,the battle for custody continued.the court ruled that maria should be returned to her natural parents.





  • Che Aminah appealed again for the custody of Maria. On 11 December 1950,the court sat to hear Maria's case.




  • This cause large crowds gathered outside the court at the Padang to know the verdict.Once more,the judge rejected the appeal.




  • Muslim felt betrayed as they saw British taking sides with the Dutch.




  • In December 1950 ,the supporters of Aminah at the Padang started to riot.

What happened after the riots

1. Cars were overturned and burnt. Serious rioting continues for three days and a curfew was imposed for two weeks.




2. Troops were called in to maintain law and order.






3.By the third day, situation was under control.
4. About 18 people were killed and 173 were injured during the riots.
